Salford’s Renal Complementary Therapy Team has had the pleasure of accepting the prestigious Complementary Therapy Award for the pain management category in 2022.
We were delighted when Janet Cairnie, Lead Practitioner, shared the news as the project started in December 2015 with funding from Kidney Care UK.

Janet (pictured), makes aromatherapy blends for the team to use with dialysis patients. These blends can help with chronic pain and spasms in patients' legs and feet, muscle pains and bone pains.
Dialysis patients can also suffer with pruritus (itching), irritable legs, problems sleeping and low energy as well as stress, anxiety and poor concentration. To date several patients have reported a marked improvement in their ability to sleep after a therapy session, with some who had suffered with excruciating night cramps reporting their cramps had eased considerably after a leg massage from one of team.
“The team are amazing! They are all professional, qualified therapists who volunteer to give up their free time to come and provide therapies for the patients who are on dialysis," explains Janet.
"Patients have told us that they really look forward to the Therapy Team attending. It has been a tough couple of years so I feel so proud of the Therapy Team, as despite everything they are still keen to continue. This Award means so much to us, it has placed us up in the same league as with other leading Complementary Therapy Providers in the NHS. We have worked so hard and always have the patient’s best interests at the centre of everything we do.”
