The new system was designed to meet important objectives, including that where possible donor and recipient will be more closely matched in age, so that the longevity of the organ is more closely matched to the recipient. Young adults should wait a shorter time to transplant and long waiting times should be avoided if they are predictable, e.g. if someone is highly sensitised. A computer algorithm (programme) does the matching, based on a points system which depends on a combination of factors, including waiting time, blood group etc.
The scheme will be closely evaluated and there is much more detail in the Working towards a new Kidney Offering Scheme document and on the NHSBT website. Do talk to your care team if you have any questions.
