Earlier this year over 1,200 of our supporters filled in our Worried Sick survey. Now that shielding has been paused in many areas of the UK we’re asking you to once again let us know how the pandemic is affecting you.
In our earlier survey we found that a lack of clarity in communications had meant that one in ten (13%) of those who were not told to shield had conditions that meant they should have been shielding (such as transplants, dialysis or late stage Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)). Worryingly, 6% of patients had received conflicting advice about whether they should shield or not and almost one in five (18%) of those told verbally to shield received no written confirmation, leaving them unable to access centrally coordinated support (including medicine collection and supermarket delivery slots) or provide evidence to employers.
Fiona Loud, Policy Director at Kidney Care UK, said: “There is a real feeling at the moment that we are in limbo between a relaxation of shielding measures and a potential second wave. With colder months ahead, people slowly returning to workplaces and children returning to school, patients and families are concerned about what is going to happen and how they can keep safe. We need to hear from you so your voices are heard. We will take the findings to the government and call on them to reassure kidney patients that they have not been forgotten.”
Kidney Care UK greatly appreciates the care the NHS has given to kidney patients during the pandemic, but it is essential that the Government, NHS and other key organisations such as supermarkets learn from the experience of the first pandemic wave, to improve resilience and communications now, whether or not there is a second wave.”
