We are delighted to see that Kernow CCG have listened to our request for an immediate pause to implementation of their plan to make many kidney patients pay for transport to access their life saving treatment.
Recently Kidney Care UK and St Austell and Newquay MP Steve Double met with a number of representatives from NHS Kernow, Amanda Stratford from Healthwatch Cornwall, as well as members of the renal team from the Royal Cornwall NHS Trust, to discuss the recently updated non-emergency patient transport policy. The specific focus of the meeting was on transport for renal dialysis patients.
Fiona Loud, Policy Director said, "It was an open and constructive meeting and we are all now working together on producing and agreeing an appropriate assessment criteria to ensure that dialysis patients are able to continue to receive their transport. The development of this assessment criteria, will be clinically led by Paul Johnston, Renal Consultant, and once agreed, this assessment process will be incorporated into the NHS Kernow non–emergency patient transport policy. Kidney Care UK believe that all patients who need transport to get to their dialysis should be provided with it free of charge and will continue to work towards this goal."
We are determined to do everything possible to ensure that the decision to charge patients for transport is reversed".
In the meantime, and until 31 October, anyone who needs transport will continue to receive it free of charge.
