Giving patients and families the freedom to travel
Kidney disease can leave you feeling low, isolated and trapped at times. You may rely on benefits to get by and it’s not easy when illness stops you working and has a real impact on family life.
We give grants to individuals and families towards the cost of a basic holiday in the UK or overseas. The grant can be used to cover the total cost if it is modest or it can be used as a contribution towards the final cost.
Applying for a grant
If you’re a social worker or member of a kidney care team applying on behalf of a patient, please don’t hesitate to call 01420 541424 with any questions you may have.
Please note: We cannot reimburse patients for holidays that have already been paid.for. Please apply for a grant before booking your holiday.
How to apply?
You'll need to contact your kidney unit social worker or a member of the kidney care team as all applications for grants should come to us on a grant form completed with their input.
If there's no member of staff available to help, get in touch with our Patient Support and Advocacy Officers.

Thank you very much, you don’t know how much this means to me. Five years is a long time to be refused so when they said I can go I was over the moon. I can’t thank you enough, without you I’d have nothing to look forward to, once again THANK YOU!Stephen Lamb Holiday Grant recipient
Travelling with dialysis
Everyone with kidney disease should be able to live life to the full. Holidays and respite breaks can help to reduce stress and improve
mental well being. However if you or your child need dialysis, there are certain things to consider when organising a holiday or any kind of travelling.
If you are planning a holiday or travelling for work or pleasure, the first thing to do is speak to your kidney team so that they can help plan your treatment while you are away. Try to give them as much notice as possible - ideally at least 4 weeks for travel within the UK and 3 months for travel abroad. Dialysis units near to popular holiday resorts can get busy in the peak season so the more notice you can give the better.
Kidney Care UK Dialysis Freedom is a FREE service which helps patients access Dialysis Away from Base, whether it’s a holiday, family celebration, or for work we are here to make it happen. We trust that both patients and holiday coordinators will find our site helpful, its free to use and we take care of all of the arrangements and administration.
Find out more on the Dialysis Freedom website
There is more information about getting dialysis when away, whether that’s at home or at a different hospital, in our Dialysis away from home leaflet, created in collaboration with The Renal Association.
Travel insurance is important for anyone travelling, but getting a quote for travel insurance can be challenging if you have health issues. We have a list of insurance providers that have had positive feedback from kidney patients, and many of them specialise in covering travellers with pre-existing medical conditions.
Funding for Children's Units to plan activity holidays
Kidney disease affects 891 children in the UK and we make it our mission to support these children through their childhood and on through the transition to adult life. We fund many of the children's units' activity weeks each year and they are often the highlight of the year for the children.
If anyone ever wonders what difference a single activity week can make to the quality of life of a teenager with kidney disease I can assure you it’s often a life-changing experience and without doubt our teenagers leave feeling more confident, independent and supported by their peers.
