12 year old Ella was born with Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome, a condition which caused her kidneys to fail before she was even a year old. By the time she was six years old Ella had undergone countless procedures, therapies and operations including two separate kidney transplants.
There are around 1,000 children living with chronic kidney disease in the UK. That’s 1,000 children like Ella who have missed out on so much in their short lives already. Kidney Care UK has helped Ella and her family throughout the challenges they’ve have faced. We understand the impact kidney disease has on children and their families.
In 2018 Kidney Care UK supported more than 750 young kidney patients just like Ella.
37 children attended one of our life changing paediatric activity breaks, allowing them to spend time with people their own age who are going through similar experiences.
9 paediatric teams received funding to help take a team to the Transplant Games, giving children the chance to be active, make friends and compete in different sports. Ella was part of one of these teams.
For Ella, being part of the Manchester Children’s Hospital Transplant Games Team has been amazing. She’s been taking part for five years now and every year it’s such a special and emotional event. She loves being part of a team, meeting all the other teams and getting to spend time with her hospital friends in a different setting.Karen Ella’s mum

10 children received personalised presents whilst undergoing treatment on Christmas Eve making Christmas a little more magical.
Being able to personalise gifts for each of the children having dialysis on Christmas Eve was incredible. We were able to get them toys and activities that we knew they would love and being able to see their joyful smiles absolutely made our day. Thank you Kidney Care UK for making our Christmas magical.Claire Hardy Play Specialist at Nottingham Children's Hospital
