Kidney Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM)

Every year the Kidney PREM collects the views of kidney patients across the UK to build a national picture of renal care experiences. Find out more about PREM, how the results are reported and how to take part in this year's survey.

What is the Kidney PREM?

The Kidney Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM) is a national annual survey of kidney patients.

The PREM survey is shared every year and is open to kidney patients aged 17 and over. Since 2022, the Kidney PREM has been extended to the UK's 13 Paediatric Centres, allowing the collection of views from young people (aged 12 years or older) and parents/carers of children who are receiving treatment for any stage of chronic kidney disease.

Why should I take part in the Kidney PREM?

The Kidney PREM has been created by patients and professionals working together to produce a report on how kidney patients experience care across the UK. Every year, it

  • helps renal unit teams understand how patients feel about their experience of care
  • shows where patients themselves think that improvements can be made
  • provides a national picture of people’s experience of care

It’s by listening to you and getting your feedback that we can make change happen and improve services.

Every year the Kidney PREM are published by the UK Kidney Association (UKKA) and Kidney Care UK.

Who runs the Kidney PREM?

The Kidney PREM is led by Kidney Care UK, the UK’s leading kidney patient support charity, and the UK Kidney Association (UKKA).

Last year it was completed by over 11,000 people in the UK who live with kidney disease and responses were received from every adult NHS renal centre across the UK.

How was the Kidney PREM established?

The PREM was launched in 2016 as one of a range of measures to regularly collect kidney patient reported experiences.

It was started through the Transforming Participation in Chronic Kidney Disease (TP-CKD) Programme, initially working with 10 renal units. However, renal unit clinical directors agreed at their annual forum in 2016 that a national PREM survey would be valuable for patients. This first pilot of PREM in 2016 involved 39 of the 52 adult renal units in England and saw over 8,000 responses from people with kidney disease.

Since this first PREM, the survey has undergone a rigorous validation process, in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire and renal centres across Wales.

In 2022, with the support of the British Association for Paediatric Nephrology, the paediatric kidney PREM was piloted in all 13 Paediatric Centres, allowing the collection of views from young people (aged 12 years or older) and parents/carers of children who are receiving treatment for CKD.
